One of the best things about the summer is being outside in the hot weather and enjoying a cold beer with friends. Whether you are drinking beer on its own or pairing with a summer meal, you should definitely take advantage of the large range of great summer seasonal ales and beers available. Here is my top three beers which I recommend you give a go this summer.
1. Sierra Nevada Summerfest, crisp lager – California & North Carolina – 5% ABV
Sierra Nevada is famous for its pale ales, which have a rich hoppy flavor and a good level of bitterness, great for cooler times of the year in my opinion. During those hot summer months I’d recommend their Summerfest lager which is a Czech style pilsner which has a lighter, crisp and less hoppy flavor, it’s incredibly drinkable and perfect served iced cold, it pairs well with grilled chicken, sushi, salads and lightly spiced sausages
2. Shiner Ruby Redbird – Texas – 4.01% ABV
Shiner beer comes from the town of Shiner, Texas which is located near to Austin. Ruby Redbird is a pilsner style lager which is brewed with real Texas grapefruit and a kick of fresh ginger. I was very impressed with the light refreshing taste of this beer when I first tried it, it has a very low level of bitterness making it very refreshing during hot weather. The taste of grapefruit is more powerful than that of ginger, however they are both subtle enough to not overpower the flavor of the beer, it’s not as sweet as one might expect, which makes this very easy to drink. Ruby Redbird was originally a summer seasonal beer, however because of its vast popularity it is now available all year round, it pairs well with grilled meats, salads and anything you’re eating outdoors
3. Pyramid Apricot Ale – Washington State – 5.1% ABV
This wheat beer style ale is rich and flavorful with a very real taste of fresh apricots, the beer is slightly sweet in taste and reminds me of a type of beer cocktail that is popular in France called “bier a la peche”, which is beer with peach syrup. Pyramid apricot ale is not nearly as sweet as the French concoction but definitely has a mild sweetness which is very pleasant. The apricot flavor makes this beer very refreshing and smooth, perfect for warm evenings and grilling. This beer would pair well with any pork dish, game birds, salads and grilled vegetables.
